Mysterious Respiratory Illness Affects Dogs Across Several States

In a concerning development, veterinary laboratories in various states, including Oregon, Colorado, and New Hampshire, are grappling with an unusual respiratory illness affecting dogs. Veterinarians are urging pet owners to take precautions while they work to identify the cause of the illness, which leads to persistent respiratory problems and pneumonia, resistant to antibiotics.

Since mid-August 2023, over 200 cases of this mysterious disease have been documented by the Oregon Department of Agriculture. The agency is collaborating with state researchers and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratory to unravel the mystery behind these cases.

Symptoms of the respiratory illness in dogs include coughing, sneezing, nasal or eye discharge, and lethargy. Alarmingly, some cases progress rapidly, with dogs becoming severely ill within 24 to 36 hours. Sadly, there have been reported deaths, though the lack of a clear definition for the disease makes it challenging to determine the exact number.

Kurt Williams, director of the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University, urged dog owners not to panic. He emphasized the importance of keeping pets up to date on vaccines, especially those protecting against various respiratory illnesses. Despite the severity of the situation, Williams aims to reassure concerned pet owners.

Veterinary labs nationwide are collaborating to share their findings, attempting to pinpoint the cause of this mysterious illness. David Needle, senior veterinary pathologist at the University of New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, has been investigating the disease for nearly a year. His team has analyzed samples from dogs in multiple states and encourages pet owners to minimize contact between dogs as a precaution.

As the investigation continues, veterinarians and researchers are working tirelessly to identify the source of the illness and develop strategies to safeguard the health of our beloved canine companions.
